Assistant Professor
Verónica San Miguel was graduated in Chemistry from Universidad de Valladolid (2000). After she presented her dissertation about “Discotic Liquid Crystals of Gold” in 2002, she was awarded by Ministerio de Educación with a fellowship of Training University Lecturer (FPU) programm to accomplish her doctoral thesis at the Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Polímeros (CSIC, Madrid, ES) on “Controlled Polymer Synthesis”. She carried out two predoctoral stays (seven months in total) at University of Warwick (Coventry, United Kingdom), under the supervision of Prof. David M. Haddleton. She finished her european PhD in 2007 and next, she was contracted as a postdoc at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, where her research was based on “Synthesis of Polyrotaxans as Nanoreinforced Materials”
In 2009, she joined the Max Planck Institute für Polymerforschung (Mainz, DE) as a post-doctoral researcher for 2 years and 9 months. Her research focused on “Phototunable Surfaces”. During her postdoc she participated in different projects with several researching groups. She spent a short stay at University of Fribourg (Switzerland), starting a fruitful collaboration with Prof. C.G. Bochet’s group. She also performed a stay for one month at Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina) funded by a Max-Planck project.
In 2011, she joined the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales (Madrid, ES) for one year, where she worked on “Polymer-Modified Magnetic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications. Currently, she is a visiting profesor at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid and her research is based on the “Preparation and Characterization of Polymeric Nanocomposites by Surface Modification of (Nano-)particles, Graphene, and Magnetic Nanoparticles” and on the “Study of the Interfacial Structure in Nanocomposites and their Relation to the Properties of the Material”. In March 2017, she has also been appointed academic secretary of materials department at University.
During her carrier she has published 30 articles: 21 in SCI Journals with a high scientific quality (2 Advanced Materials (IF:17.493); 1 Angewandte Chemie International Edition (IF:13.734); 1 Journal of the American Chemical Society (IF:9.907); 2 Carbon (IF:6.198); 1 Chemical Communication (IF:4.521); 3 Langmuir (IF:4.187), among others), more than 90% of them are in the first quartile in their fields, and 7 book chapters. All her articles have accumulated 738 citations which provide a H index of 14 (WoS). She has participated in 31 conferences and seminars (5 invited talks). She has taken part in 14 R&D projects; 2 european and 2 with private companies. She pointed out her wide range of experience acquired in 7 different research centres of recognized prestige (3 national and 4 international) during her doctorate and mainly for her postdoctoral stage. She is a regular reviewer for different journals of Materials Science. She was twice awarded in recognition for being within the highest 15% of the personnel of the University Carlos III with respect to the quality of scientific research.
She has codirected one international doctoral thesis which was defended in March, 2017. She has supervised several postgraduate students (5 final master projects, 2 final degree projects, and 1 project for an international student) and currently, she supervises 2 PhD students and 1 student with a final degree project.
Her teaching experience is focused on Materials Science and Chemistry in several bilingual engineering degrees. She teaches in the Master of Materials Science and Engineering and she was coordinator teacher in a materials science and chemistry courses. She also coordinates the chemistry course in International Foundation Courses. Besides, she was a tutor-teacher of international students of Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) for the last four years and she has participated in three innovative teaching courses. She is invited as a regular member of university degree and master tribunals.
